HUDEC-Caritas Jaffna implemented an Importance of Peace and Reconciliation programme under the project ‘Mobilize the youth and strengthen them to promote social cohesion and reconciliation’ funded by AGEH Germany on 26th of August 2019.   The programme was conducted at St. Antony’s Church, Nainathivu. It is an Island situated 35 km away from Jaffna town and 15 minutes travel by boat from Kurikadduvan. Another programme was conducted for youth at St. Xavier’s Church, Punkudutivu. Seventy one (71) youth from the age group of 19 to 30 participated.

Youth from Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities enthusiastically participated in the programmes. They were divided into groups and discussed about the importance of peace and reconciliation among the society and the challenges and problems faced by youth in the society. They planned in the future to actively participate in group games, art, essay, poem and essay competitions.

Especially the young women stay at home without engaging themselves in self-employment or other activities. As they are living in Islands the opportunity for trainings on self-employment is much limited. Youth (male) are engaged in fishing and due to this their attendance was delayed.

Revd. Fr. Sebajeevan, Parish Priest, Punkudutivu and Ms. S. Sharmila, Reporting Officer HUDEC-Caritas Jaffna conducted the programme as Resource Persons.
